Syphilis produces a painless ulcer on the body part that's come into contact with an infected person. The sore slowly leaks a clear liquid, which contains a large amount of syphilis bacteria. If it touches someone else's broken skin or a mucous membrane (such as the inside of the vagina) there is a likelihood of developing into a new sore  thereby  passing on the infection. Initially the sores might cause no pain and are often located in hidden areas, so people can transmit syphilis without knowing they have it.

A few cases of syphilis are transmitted from infected mothers to their newborns, but with routine screening this form of transmission has almost vanished.

THE THREE STAGE SYMPTOMS OF SYPHILLIS:

The symptoms of Syphillis develop in three stages

·         Stage 1:PRIMARY SYPHILLIS-It first start with a painless but highly infectious sore on the genitals or sometimes around the mouth.If somebody else comes into close contact with the sore especially during sexual contact,they can also become infected.The sore can last for two weeks before vanishing

·         Stage 2:SECONDARY SYPHILLIS-The most prevailing symptoms at this stage are sore throat and skin rash which may  vanish within few weeks..Thereafter  it can go into hidden phase for years.After this hidden phase it can progress to the most dangerous phase

·         Stage 3:TERTIARY SYPHILLIS-At this stage the infection can cause serious damage to the body.If not treated at this stage it can progress to a more dangerous form and can cause stroke,paralysis,blindess or even death.People who aren't treated during the primary stage have a 1 in 3 chance of developing chronic tertiary syphilis. The bacteria retreat deep into the body and are no longer contagious, but syphilis can reappear decades after the last rash of secondary syphilis. The disease poses a grave threat to the internal organs, including the brain, heart, blood vessels, and bones. Syphilis can lead to death if it is not treated.  

                                                               Complications of tertiary syphilis include:

Brain damage: Depending on which part of the brain damaged, symptoms could range from motor effects (such as tremors) to mood disorders (such as having delusions). Muscle weakness, pain, decreased muscle coordination, and loss of movement of the limbs are possible.

Heart and blood vessel damage: Syphilis has a particular tendency to damage the walls of the aorta, the body's biggest artery, which can lead to an aneurysm. This syndrome usually appears 10 to 25 years after the initial infection.

Damage to the retina and the vital nerves and blood vessels at the back of the eye: Syphilis usually attacks both eyes. If left untreated, irreversible eye damage that may result in blindness can develop. Again, this can happen many years after the original infection.

CONVENTIONAL TREATMENT AND PREVENTION:

Syphilis is treatable at all stages with Penicillin. Despite over 55 years of the use of penicillin,the syphilis bacterium has not yet be found to have developed resistance to this original antibiotic. For primary syphilis, one injection (usually given as half a dose into each buttock) is enough to permanently cure this disease that once claimed so many lives.

Secondary and hidden syphilis are treated the same way. But instead of one injection there are 3 injections over several weeks. Most people with infectious syphilis, especially those in the secondary stage, suffer a reaction when they're first treated. The symptoms include a sudden fever with headache, sweating, and possibly a rash. This clears up in less than 24 hours.

Within a day or two the infection is stopped with penicillin, and cures the disease in a week or two.It is medically advisable for the treated person should wait until the treatment is finished before engaging in any form of sex. If the person is allergic to penicillin, another antibiotic can be used.
